TR - The acers invade PCW with the PCW Junkies! (pt 1)- August 11&12, 2000
I began typing this and found that it was to long for one post, so it will be a two partner, even at that it's still long.
We left home on Friday 8/11 at 8AM, it was a beautiful day, blue skies and comfortable temps. We drove North to the toll road, then East to I-75, North again (to Detroit) and crossed the border at Windsor. It was difficult being so near Cedar Point and not visiting the park, but a visit to PCW with "the" PCW junkies spurred us on. When questioned at the border, we should have just stated we were visiting friends and left it at that. But, we also mentioned we were going to PCW to ride coasters. With that the guard asked us several more questions. I guess being a coaster enthusiasts makes you suspicious characters.
The border behind us, we worked our way through Windsor to PH 401 and Eastward to Toronto. Just outside of Windsor we spotted a billboard for a small amusement center in Chatham, Wild Zone Adventures. It was only 10 miles out of the way and the billboard showed it had a coaster. So, we exited at Chatham and (bless those Canadians) there were signs that led us directly to the place. It was an indoor center geared for 3 -12 year olds, but we were allowed to ride the Endicott Emerald Mine Coaster. It's a small steel kiddie coaster (Miler?). The train looks likes like a locomotive and the theming consisted of a mural painted on the wall. The ride was quite zippy, most consisted of three laps. Sensing we were enthusiasts we were given an extra lap, what a bargain, $1.40 (American). After taking a few photos we were back on the road.
We stopped for a late lunch and called Donna (Mrs. Junkie) to set up a meeting time & place. Luckily, we had foreseen hitting Toronto at rush hour. We arrived at PCW, (they honored our PKI parking pass), found a parking spot and headed for the entrance. We had to go to GR and show our PKI passes. There we received comp tickets. As we entered the park, we were asked if we wanted our hand stamped, luckily we said yes. Later, we found that PCW sells two types of tickets and you need the stamp to ride the rides. We headed to the washroom, then back to the entrance. There waiting for us was none other than Mr. & Mrs. PCW junkie (Kevin & Donna). We chatted as we waited for the kids, Adam & Nolan, who were at the park with Donna's cousin, Norma Jean, her husband Ken, son Douglas and nephew Christopher. The "gang" showed up a few moments later and we were off.
We worked our way through the park, with the experts leading us. PCW is a beautiful park, like PKI & PKD, it has a large fountain and an International Street area as you enter the park. Instead of the Eiffel Tower there is Wonder Mountain, which features the Eruption, a nightly pyrotechnic display celebrating PCW's 20th Anniversary. The mountain also houses Thunder Run, an electric powered mine train and part of Vortex, an Arrow suspended coaster.
In the 4 hours we were in the park we managed to ride Dragon Fire, Cliffhanger, Wilde Beast, the Fly, Nightmares (in the rain), Sol Loco and Top Gun. Plus catch some of the Eruption show. We headed to the parking lot, arranging to follow Kevin home. Are these people gracious or what? Opening their home to a couple of coaster crazy Americans!
The Reids live close to PCW, so the drive was a short one. With 4 relatives and 2 guests, one may have thought we would be sleeping on the floor. But no, Kevin's computer room has a pullout couch, which became our room for the night. That may explain why Kevin didn't post anything on the URC that night!
We were to excited to sleep, so we trade "park stories and eat a tasty meal. Donna says she isn't a good cook, DON'T believe it. She made 5 wonderful meals while we were their guests. We stayed up past 1 AM, talking coasters and stuff and then finally headed to bed.
